There is dearth of strong institutional arrangement for capacity development in deposit insurance systems globally. Also, virtually all existing formal instructional settings, starting from the primary, and secondary, and to the post-secondary levels, lack curricula on deposit insurance knowledge. Accordingly, graduates of these educational institutions, including university graduates in Banking & Finance, Business Management, Economics and related courses lack basic knowledge on the workings of deposit insurance scheme.
Moreover, most professional associations that operate in the financial services industry that have some form of capacity development arrangements for their members pay very little or no attention to the knowledge of DIS despite its critical role in the safety-net arrangement. Therefore, taking cognizance of the relevance of DIS in financial system stability, especially its role in ensuring banking safety, soundness, and depositors’ confidence, it’s imperative to bridge the existing knowledge gap by developing professional courses that would equip people with foundational and proficiency skills to enhance its practice.

A partial or full certification (professional status) in Deposit Insurance System (DIS), will, aside from equipping candidates with the requisite knowledge to smartly operate as consumers of banking products and services, and meaningfully relate with others in the present globalized financial world, it would equally prepare candidates to pursue careers in the financial services industry and allied functions, including managerial positions in bank regulatory and supervisory authorities.

Accordingly, the ISDIS syllabus for DIS training has been structured into three levels, namely: Foundation; Intermediate; and Professional.

The Governing Board reserves the right to periodically review the courses and curricula for the different levels to address changes in the operating environments.
