Advanced Financial Diagnostics & Risk Strategies

Overview

The Advanced Financial Diagnostics & Risk Strategies Specialization is designed to develop institutional diagnostic and strategic risk-management capabilities, this program covers financial statement analysis, stress testing and scenario design, institution-level rating frameworks (e.g., CAMELS-style), and the design of recovery, contingency and resolution linkages. Practical modelling labs and diagnostic reporting exercises train participants to identify early warning indicators and translate analysis into mitigation and resolution planning.

The program is delivered via a self-paced online format. Assessment components include case-based assignments, a comparative policy brief and a virtual examination. A minimum score of 50% is required to pass. Retake opportunities are available for a fee of ₦20,000. To qualify, applicants must hold a B.Sc./HND or a diploma supported by a minimum of two years’ work experience, or be an Associate Member of a recognised professional body with at least two years of work experience. The application process is fully online via the UNNBS and ISDIS websites, where prospective students generate an application number, pay the required fee, and subsequently receive a registration number and admission letter upon completion. Examinations are conducted virtually.

The Governing Council may approve waivers on a case-by-case basis for applicants who provide evidence of satisfactory completion of relevant subjects; applicable waiver fees will apply.

Course 1

Overview of the Financial Systems 

A financial system consists of institutions and markets that interact in a complex manner, to mobilise funds for investment and providing loans, including the payment system, etc. This Course will provide the students with knowledge of the financial system and its components, their roles in economic development, the financial markets and financial instruments and participants. Also, the functions of international financial institutions and challenges of continental and global financial institutions.

Basic Account and Finance 

This course examines the different forms of business organisations, the accounting records that they keep -the basic accounting concepts and procedures for preparing accounting records. It explains basic elements of cost, costing methods and costing techniques as well as the objectives and scope of the finance function. Financial statements analysis and its limitations.

Financial Institutions Analysis

Defines financial analysis, its objectives and benefits. Types of financial analysis, financial statements (importance and limitations), and computation of financial ratios. The CAMEL rating is also discussed.

Course 4

Risk Management in Financial Institutions

This course will expose students to the concept of risks especially as it relates to financial institutions. It show ways in which financial institutions can actively manage risk. Expose students to the strategies of mitigating risks; to various types of risk in financial institutions; the differences between solvency and liquidity.Students will also learn the concept of risk management in financial institutions, stages of risk management cycle, the methods of risk analysis; concept of risk identification, monitoring, and control. Students will further learn the concept of risk management function in financial institutions and the risk management process.

Course 5

Bank Failure and Resolution Options

This course which is in four modules introduces the students to conceptual issues in bank failure and resolution and the warning signs of banking distress. Module two discusses the causes of bank failure. Modules three and four include the bank failure resolution process and applicable strategies for managing a failing bank, among others.
