MR. PATRICK OLUROPO SANNI

Mr. Patrick Oluropo Sanni joined the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation on August 1, 1994 as an Assistant Manager after having worked with the defunct Icon Limited (Merchant Bankers) between May 1987 and July 1994, where he sharpened his skills as a Banker. He also had a brief stint with First Bank of Nigeria Limited between 1980 and 1984 before proceeding for higher education studies.
Mr. Sanni’s career progression in Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation was progressive as he was promoted from Assistant Manager when he joined Corporation in 1994 to Deputy Manager in 1998, Manager in 2002, Senior Manager in 2006, Principal Manager in 2010, Assistant Director in 2014 and Deputy Director in 2019. He was appointed the Controller in Charge of Benin Zonal Office in January 2021 until October 2022 when retired.
Mr. Patrick Sanni attended extensive training programs within and outside the Corporation both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria like Ghana, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Australia, Malaysia and United States of America including the prestigious Examination Management School (EMS) at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Arlington Virginia in United States. Some of the foreign trainings were self-sponsored.
As a young Examiner that resumed in the Field Examination Department on Monday August 29, 1994 was deployed to join the team of Examiners in the defunct United Commercial Bank Limited on the following Monday September 5, 1994 and the team eventually transmuted to the Closing Team when the bank’s licence was revoked on September 9, 1994. Immediately after that assignment, he was part of the team that investigated a major fraud of over N100 million in the Aba branch of now defunct Mercantile Bank of Nigeria Plc. after which he was redeployed to Abuja Zonal Office where he resumed on December 5, 1994. 

He had the privilege to lead his first team of Examiners in the first quarter 1995 Community Banks Examination (when he was barely 10 months in the Corporation) where the team was given five (5) banks in Adamawa for which the reports were timely and well written. He also participated in various other examinations of both Community, Merchant and Commercial Banks while he was at the Bank Examination Unit in Abuja. He participated in the Closing, Verification and Deposit Payoff of the defunct Cooperative and Commerce Bank Plc. in Onitsha during the mass revocation of licences in 1998. While at the Lobi Bank Consolidation Centre and as the Deputy Head of Credit, he collaborated with others to recover debts of loan customers banks within the coverage of the Consolidation Centre. He was deployed to Kano Zonal Office to clear the outstanding reconciliation issues in the Finance unit of the Zone which was cleared before he was redeployed to the Bank Examination Department in April 2000.
While in Bank Examination Department, he was involved in the Examination of Tier One banks in Nigeria including United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc. Zenith Bank Plc. Stanbic IBTC Bank Limited, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) Limited, and First Bank of Nigeria (FBN) Limited as well as FBN Holdings Plc. etc. He led the joint CBN/RBS Examination of Citibank and Enterprise Bank Limited before it merged with Heritage Bank Limited. His area of core competence in Bank Examination included Foreign Exchange Examination, Anti Money Laundering, Credit, Accounts etc. While he was still in BED he was a member of the CBN/NDIC Technical Committee on Adoption of IFRS by Nigerian Banks. He was also a member of the Financial Services Regulation Coordinating Committee (FSRCC) Sub Committees on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Consolidation Supervision (CS)
He was also a member of the Committee that developed the Curriculum that was used to provide Technical Assistance to the Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2014/2015 in which he was also a Facilitator. Mr. Sanni’s core interest is impacting knowledge on others and he has facilitated and still facilitates in different programmes organised by different departments in the NDIC including NDIC Academy, Bank Examination Department, Special Insured Institutions Department, Insurance and Surveillance Department, Asset Management Department, Benin Zonal Office etc. While in Asset Management Department (AMD) as Team Lead and eventually a Group Head in charge of the Microfinance and Primary Mortgage Banks as well as the Enugu Consolidation Center (ECC), he was responsible for the recovery of customers’ loans of the banks within the group as well as the ECC. Still at the AMD, He was also a member NDIC Bank Closing Committee and Chairman of Committee of Assignment of Accounts to Debt Recovery Agents in NDIC.
While in Benin Zonal Office, his basic achievement was capacity development for staff to which all the staff in the Zone were given opportunities to make presentations at the Technical Sessions at the end of each monthly staff meeting. Outside the Corporation, he facilitates at programmes organised by Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC), Mandatory Compulsory Professional Education (MCPE) of ICAN as well training organised during Members’ Forum of Ikeja District Society of ICAN etc. He is an Examiner with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) responsible for setting Examination questions. As an active member of ICAN, he has served in various committees of ICAN including Accounting Technician Scheme West Africa (ATSWA), Professional; Examination, Entrepreneurship and Employment Generation Committee and the Institute’s Annual Accountants’ Conference Committee (AAC). He was the Chairman of Ikeja and District Society of ICAN for 2012/2013. He is married with children and enjoys teaching, travelling, meeting and helping people among others.
